2 Invisible Man Chapters 20-22
THINGS FALL APART

3 Brother Tod Clifton ‘Tod’ means ‘death’ in German
The narrator attributes Clifton’s death specifically to racism; he doesn’t speak in vague terms about ‘general oppression’ The narrator repeatedly utters Clifton’s name hoping to engrave the memory into the minds of the black community to prevent his descent into invisibility

4 Brother Jack False eye is symbolic of his physical blindness and inability to see the black community as real people. The Brotherhood attaches more political importance to the selling of the Sambo dolls than to Clifton’s murder. The narrator loses the illusion that he can be a free individual in the Brotherhood

17 Racial and Racist Stereotypes in Media
Stereotyping arises out of the need to generalize in order to make sense out of a very complicated environment Stereotyping allows people to easily categorize new things into comfortable spaces already defined in their experiences.

18 Why are we exploring this?
In Invisible Man, Ellison includes two symbols about the damaging power of prejudice. Stereotypes and prejudice interfere with an individual’s ability to form an authentic identity. The U.S. has a history of racial stereotypes The narrator is limited by the society around him – are you?

19 Blackface Montage from Spike Lee’s Bamboozled

20 Jim Crow The term Jim Crow originated in 1830 when a White minstrel show performer, Thomas "Daddy" Rice, blackened his face with burnt cork and danced a jig while singing the lyrics to the song, "Jump Jim Crow."

21 Zip Coon First performed by George Dixon in 1834, Zip Coon made a mockery of free blacks. An arrogant, ostentatious figure, he dressed in high style and spoke in a series of puns that undermined his attempts to appear dignified.

22 Mammy Mammy is a source of earthy wisdom who is fiercely independent and brooks no backtalk. Although her image changed a little over the years, she was always a favorite of advertisers.

23 Uncle Tom Toms are typically good, gentle, religious and sober. Images of Uncle Toms were another favorite of advertisers and "Uncle Ben" is still being used to sell rice.

24 Buck The Buck is a large Black man who is proud, sometimes menacing, and always interested in White women.

25 Wench/Jezebel The temptress. During the minstrel era, wenches were typically a male in female garb. In film, wenches were usually female mulattos.

26 Mulatto A mixed-blood male or female. In film, often portrayed as a tragic figure who either intentionally or unintentionally passes for White until they discover they have Negro blood or are discovered by another character to be Black

27 Pickaninny Picaninnies have bulging eyes, unkempt hair, red lips and wide mouths into which they stuff huge slices of watermelon.

28 Racial and Racist Stereotypes in Media
Explore the site- read about the history of other groups who have been historically stereotyped. Jot down notes – what trends or patterns do you recognize across these stereotypes? Equal opportunity for all in Hollywood? Or are there certain roles limited to certain people?
