Chapter 5 summary. Earth, Sun, and Moon.
Space is all around Earth. Most of it is empty. Earth and the sun are shaped like balls. Earth is much smaller than the sun. Earth is made of oceans and dry land and is covered by air. The sun is made of very hot, burning gases. Plants, animals, and people need the sun. the sun keeps Earth warm and provides light so that plants can make their food. The moon and the stars are in space above Earth. Stars are suns; they are balls of burning gases.

Earth moves and spins, or rotates, around the sun
Earth moves and spins, or rotates, around the sun. It is day when the sun lights the side of Earth facing the sun and night on the side of Earth away from the sun. The moon is made of rocks and moves around Earth. The moon is visible because the sun shines on it. During the month, different phases of the moon are visible – new moon, first quarter, full moon, and last quarter.
