Zero-emission Enabling-technology Transit Users Group
Advanced Transportation Technologies Clean Transportation Solutions SM NHA Annual Hydrogen Conference 2008 Early Markets: Heavy Duty Fleets April 1, 2008 Presenter Lawrence Wnuk PhD, Senior Director Copyright CALSTART 2008
2
Agenda Topics Background ZE-TUG Member Survey Status and Next Steps
CALSTART Task Z Bus Regulation ZE-TUG Mission, Objectives Membership Model and Concept Member Survey Approach Results Status and Next Steps
3
Background - FTA Hydrogen Task
FTA requested CALSTART assistance Developing paths forward to hydrogen Goal is a results oriented collaboration FTA approved initial funds to form a group of Transit Agencies CALSTART began with a focus on the California Z Bus Regulation Developed an initial concept Met with Alt. Fuel Path transit properties
4
Background: Zero Emission Bus (Z Bus) Regulation
Z Bus Purchase Requirements Diesel Fuel path Based on number of buses January 1, 2007 Agencies with > 200 buses 15% Zero-emission buses Alternative Fuel path Based on number of buses January 1, 2009 15% Zero-emission buses
5
CALSTART Working with Transit Agencies Toward Z Bus Compliance
Alternative-Fuel Transit Agencies Require Fuel Cell, Battery or Trolley Propulsion 15% of all new procurements Formed a Working Group of Transit Agencies Seek commercial solutions for the market 2008 2010 FC Buses 2015
6
Transit Users Group Mission
Proactively explore paths forward Zero-emission, Enabling-technologies Seek reduced total fleet emissions Seek independence from petroleum Zero-emission Enabling-technology Transit Users Group … ZE - TUG
7
Transit Users Group Objectives
Users (TAs) bring the weight of practical transit fleet experience into suggestions / evaluations of potential paths Explore options: fuel cells, battery-electrics, catenary hydrogen internal combustion engines (HICE), & hydrogen-blend internal combustion engines (HBICE) Execute projects in support of TUG, future purchase options
8
ZE-TUG Transit Membership
ZE-TUG members are comprised of the following Southern California transit properties that chose to follow the CARB Alternative Fuel Path - > 5,000 buses SunLine Transit Agency (Co-leader) Los Angeles County MTA (ATVC) (Co-leader) Omnitrans Orange County Transportation Authority Riverside Transit Sacramento Regional Transit District San Diego’s Metropolitan Transit System Santa Monica’s Big Blue Bus Montebello Bus Lines San Diego North County Transit District (Observer)
9
ZE-TUG Model Model for ZE-TUG similar to successful CALSTART Hybrid Truck Users Forum (Endorsed by SCAQMD, NAC and Heavy Duty Community) A Transit User driven process CALSTART helps identify technology pathways forward, jointly develop requirements, collaborate on demos, share data Jointly seek funds and share knowledge ZE-TUG is “Voice of the Customer” for suppliers Encourages technologies commercialization
10
ZE-TUG Concept - User Members with Supplier Support
Members - Users Transit Agencies on Alt. Fuel Path Support – Suppliers, researchers by invitation TUG Requirements Technology Suppliers Demos, Pilot Projects Paths, Data, Evaluation ZE Bus Tech-Enable
11
Member Survey - Approach
Created simple questionnaire H2 Familiarity Technology Interviewed TUG members Excel spread sheet the answers Chart the results
12
Familiarity of Hydrogen in Transit Buses is Mixed
