Gettysburg: Union victory after 3 days of fighting in Pennsylvania that turned the tide in the war toward the Union.

South’s “High-Water Mark”:
During Pickett’s Charge, Confederate General Armistead’s men made it to the Union lines but were beat back. Name refers to this was as close as the South ever got to winning the war.

Siege of Vicksburg: Union army 6 week blockade of the city trying to gain control of the Mississippi River. Town was taken over by the Union on July 4, 1863, one day after the Confederacy lost at Gettysburg.

Gettysburg Address: proclaimed the Civil War as a struggle for the preservation of the Union, with "a new birth of freedom“ that would bring true equality to all of its citizens. Lincoln also redefined the Civil War as a struggle not just for the Union, but also for the principle of human equality. “Government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth."
