9 Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God
9 Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God. (Matt. 5:9) What’s a peacemaker? Who is a peacemaker? Why are they called sons of God?

Who are the peacemakers?
Peacemaker is an active word. Jesus uses the Hebrew word shalom.

Numbers 6:24-26 24 “ ‘ “The LORD bless you and keep you;
25 the LORD make his face shine upon you and be gracious to you; 26 the LORD turn his face toward you and give you peace.” ’

Shalom means wholeness and wellness.
Shalom is the Old Testament word for salvation. Being a peacemaker means having a “reaching” heart.

Jesus’ Example Jesus was always noticing people.
Jesus was always engaging people. Jesus was always connecting people.

28 “… even the dogs under the table eat the children’s crumbs
28 “… even the dogs under the table eat the children’s crumbs.” (Mark 7:28) 29 Then he told her, “For such a reply, you may go; the demon has left your daughter.” (Mark 7:29) Jesus consistently acted to meet people’s needs.

The Prince of Peace 34 “Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. (Matt. 10:34)

Jesus’ mission is to turn the world upside down.

Matthew 10:16 16 I am sending you out like sheep among wolves. Therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves. (Matt. 10:16)

Matthew 10:28 28 Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell. (Matt. 10:28)

Matthew 10:35-36 35 For I have come to turn “ ‘a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law - 36 a man’s enemies will be the members of his own household.’

Matthew 10:37-39 37 “Anyone who loves his father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves his son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me; 38 and anyone who does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me. 39 Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.

What does it mean to be sons of God?
Always noticing people. Always engaging people. Always connecting people. Consistently acting to meet people’s needs.

John 15:20 20 Remember the words I spoke to you: ‘No servant is greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also.

1 Peter 2:21 21 To this you were called, because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in his steps.

James 5:20 20 remember this: Whoever turns a sinner from the error of his way will save him from death and cover over a multitude of sins.

What does that mean to us?
By noticing people! By engaging people! By connecting people!
