2. Pacing
Stylistic device that controls how quickly or slowly the story unfolds – “the manipulation of time”.
Elements of Pacing:
Action – Can be described at a slower pace to increase suspense or more rapidly to move the plot along.
Sensory Language/ Description- Including description slows a scene down and allows the reader to see the scene unfold.
Word Choice/ Sentence Structure – Scenes that you want to move quickly should be described with short, concise sentences and word choice. Scenes that you want to prolong should be written with more complex sentences and word choice.

4. Practice
Topic: A tornado smashing a house. Describe this scenario twice, once with a fast pace and then slow the event down. Experiment with word choice, sentence structure, action, etc.
