CTMA Investment - $90K; Industry Cost Share - $185K
A severe shortage of skilled metal finishing artisans due to retirements (50% projected over next five years) results in loss of expertise leading to high scrap/rework costs, reduced quality and throughput (fewer parts when needed). Current OJT methods are ineffective/inconsistent. Other options (send workers to training) are too expensive and not targeted. Develop a comprehensive computer based training (CBT) course targeted for metal finishing workers supplementing knowledge being lost as experienced workers retire. Designed specifically for on the floor metal finishers to educate them in basic electro-chemistry concepts and trouble shooting. Standardized, trackable testing is included. CTMA Investment - $90K; Industry Cost Share - $185K Metal Finishing Development Program DoD Cost Benefit: Up to 30% less rework at three sponsoring locations plus a stronger, less costly workforce training program DoD Benefits Application by Armed Services: Level 1 Benefits: Reduction in cycle time Improved part quality Increased throughput Reduced costs (20-30% of total rework) Enhanced shop floor worker training at less cost CTMA Sponsored: US Army: CCAD key helicopter components (13 metal finishing lines) US Air Force: OC-ALC (Tinker) aircraft engines and accessories (11 plating lines) US Navy: FRC Southwest (North Island) fixed wing and helicopter components; FRC East (Cherry Point) helicopter components Potential: All DoD activities with technical training needs beyond metal finishing (e.g. painting, stripping) could benefit from effective, targeted CBT training. Level 2 Benefits: Other depots with plating/metal finishing operations would benefit. Level 3 Potential: Can used as a model for future CBT training throughout all DoD maintenance activities.
