Project History and Background
El Camino Real Master Planning Study completed in 2003 - Developed guidelines for transforming El Camino from “primarily vehicle oriented highway” to a “true multi-modal urban thoroughfare” - Improve mobility and safety for all modes of travel - Collaborative study with Caltrans and community groups City obtained a “Community Design and Transportation” Grant through VTA to fund the project RFP was put out one year ago to hire design consultants City has been developing design over the past summer Need to get approval from Caltrans since El Camino is State Route 82 3

Existing Conditions - Crosswalks skewed - “Porkchop” islands
- Narrow sidewalks - Wide traffic lanes - No pedestrian refuge in ECR - No landscaping - Large radius, “free right” turns Stanford Ave El Camino Real Stanford University 4

Project Goals Make intersection area more pedestrian and bicycle friendly Make intersection safer for all modes of travel Shorten crosswalk distances for pedestrian crossings Add landscaping, street furniture, and other enhancements Provide visual cues to drivers that they are in an area of increased pedestrian and bicycle activity Add large street trees in the median of El Camino Improve pedestrian level street lighting 5
