Key Vocabulary Punic Wars – a series of wars between Rome and Carthage. Hannibal - the famous Carthaginian General who invaded northern Italy by leading the Carthaginian army over the Alps.

Rome Spreads its Power Roman power grew slowly as the Legions fought for control of the Italian Peninsula. Rome treated those they conquered differently. The neighboring Latin's on the Tiber River became full citizens of Rome. Farther away people had all the rights of citizens except for the right to vote. All others fell into a third category, called allies.

The Commercial Network
With such easy access to the Mediterranean, Roman merchants moved goods by land and by sea. They traded Roman wine and olive oil for things from other lands such as a variety of food, raw materials, and manufactured goods. At the time of the Republic, however, another city interfered with Roman access to the Mediterranean. The most dominant city on the Mediterranean was Carthage.

The First Punic War Carthage overextends itself into Sicily.
Rome gets outraged. Rome wins and gains control of Sicily and forces Carthage to limit its colonies.

The Second Punic War Carthage occupies Spain and other Mediterranean areas. Hannibal takes the Carthaginian army through Spain over the Alps and into Italy, occupying it for over 10 years. Rome decides to weaken Carthage by attacking Spain and then Carthage. This forces Hannibal to retreat. Rome wins again

The Third Punic War Rome is still more than a little upset at Carthage so… Rome burns Carthage to the ground, sells their inhabitants into slavery, and plows salt into their fields so the crops could not grow!
