1 Animal Farm Chapters 3-4

2 Is the society of Animal Farm a classless one?
Answers will vary. Think about who is “in charge”, who is doing “the work”, and who is not.

3 What is significant about the quarrels between Napoleon and Snowball?
This is a direct representation of Trotsky and Stalin. Stalin and Trotsky argued over the way things should be done, very much like the way Snowball and Napoleon are arguing.

4 What new “maxim” does Snowball create to summarize the rules of animalism? Why does he feel the need to create this? “Four legs good, two legs bad.” The other animals struggled to read and Snowball believed that if they could memorize this, they would be golden.

5 What does Napoleon do with Bluebell and Jessies’ puppies
What does Napoleon do with Bluebell and Jessies’ puppies? Why is this significant? He takes them to train them under the rule of Animalism, but in reality, he is training them under his regime. This is significant, because Old Major specifically pointed out that Farmer Jones did wrong when he took Clover’s foals, and now Napoleon is doing something that a human has done, which is against the laws of Animalism.

6 What is the motto Boxer adopts for himself? How do the pigs view Boxer?
“I will work harder” They see him as a hard worker, and useful for now.

7 The pigs try to teach the other animals to do what
The pigs try to teach the other animals to do what? How well does this go over? Read By the autumn, almost every animal on the farm was literate to some degree This could lead to the question of how much they actually understand.

8 Did Pilkington and Frederick offer to help Jones regain Animal Farm at first? How did they react to their own animals singing “Beasts of England”? No They were terrified of the rebellion of the animals.

9 Describe the Battle of Cowshed, recapping all of the major events.
Pigeons attacked first. Muriel, Benjamin, and all the sheep prodded and butted men from every side The three horses, the cows, and the pigs suddenly emerged and charged Jones and the other farmers. Boxer hit a stable lad with his hooves and believed him to be dead.

10 Where does Mollie go during the battle to prove her cowardice?
Hiding in her stall with her head buried among the hay in the manger.

11 What event occurs during the battle that changes how Boxer views rebellion? How does snowball show ruthlessness to this event? Boxer believes that he kills someone. Snowball says “No sentimentality, Comrade!...War is war. The only good human being is a dead one.” This shows how he feels about humans and shows how ruthless he can be.

12 What human rituals did the animals use to celebrate their victory?
They held funerals for the fallen. They created military honors and medals.
