Three topics People from all over the world come to Canada and often those with children claim that the quality of education is the main factor in their decision to immigrate to Canada. It has been stated that Canadian Education System is the best in the world! (Agree or Disagree) Canada is a very multicultural country with at least one representative from each country of the world. To show respect to different religions, customs and traditions and celebrate multiculturalism we should no longer say “Merry Christmas” but use “Happy Holidays” instead. (Agree or Disagree) Students often argue that texting or using other social media while in class or doing homework doesn’t interfere with the learning process. (Agree or Disagree)

Rules Please remember, the opinion presented by the team member may not reflect their personal opinion. Use proper language and be polite in referring to your opposing team. One person speaks at a time. No side discussions! NO INTERRUPTIONS ALLOWED All comments MUST address the previous student comment directly. You may not simply ignore a comment and shift the argument to an unrelated point.

Rules cont. All members of each side must participate in the debate.
Do not read your materials. Maintain good eye contact with the audience. You may bring some brief notes, but you may not read them. Each person will credit the source of any statistic, quotation, survey, or other research information AT THE TIME that source is mentioned during the debate.

Debate Sequence The first speaker on the affirmative team (5 minutes)
The first speaker on the opposing team (5 minutes) The second speaker on the affirmative team (5 minutes) The second speaker on the opposing team (5 minutes) Short recess for teams to prepare their rebuttals. (10 minutes)

Debate - Rebuttal The opposing team begins with the rebuttal, attempting to defend the opposing arguments and to defeat the supporting arguments without adding any new information min First rebuttal of the affirmative team 5 min Second rebuttal for closing statements of the opposing team min Second rebuttal of the affirmative. 3 min
