6. REQUIRED ACTIVITY CLASSES
Three courses selected:
Adviser approved activity course (1): Focus on sports/activities where you are NOT very skilled.
KINE 154 A Beginning Swimming (1) or approved substitution if skills test passed: Front crawl, Back crawl or backstroke, Sidestroke, Breaststroke, & Treading water.
KINE 156 A Beginning Tennis (1) or approved substitution if skills test passed: Forehand ground stroke, Backhand groundstroke, Lob, Volley, Serve, & Game play.
In addition to the 3 required activity courses, we STRONGLY recommend that you take one additional 1-unit activity class each semester!

7. How do I become a teacher?
After the BA, enrollment in a 1 year Credential program:
2 semesters of teaching in the schools and night courses on campus
Apply last semester of BA - Usually March 1st and October 1st deadlines (check w/EDUC department)
Also apply to graduate school (apply on-line). This is not mandatory but highly recommended since it will give you graduate levels units which affects starting pay.

Additional Prerequisite Courses: ENGL 471 and EDTE 302 (HCSV 451 is corequisite)
Background check (Livescan)
(Required observation hours and other prerequisite courses built into the PETE program; which saves about 9 units)

8. Subject Matter Competence
The state of CA requires competence in your subject matter by :
Completing our Undergraduate program
With a 2.75 GPA in the major or a cumulative 2.67 GPA
No lower than “C-” in any PETE courses. Or
Passing the CSET for Physical Education
This is not recommended because it is expensive, difficult, invalid, and they provide no feedback.

9. Candidate DispositioN
This form is filled out by our PETE faculty. It reflects the attitudes, values and behaviors you have exhibited while in the PETE program.
This is important because you will have K-12 students in your care.

10. Basic Skills Test (C-BEST)
The C-BEST is a test of basic math and language skills; passing it is required by all CA teachers.
Take as soon as possible, must pass the test by credential application deadline.
The CTC has practice tests and resources available on their website.
You can also use other test scores such as SAT, ACT, AP tests, etc. See for more information.

11. OPTIONAL ADD-ONS
Minor in Coaching or Minor in Exercise Science: Dr. Traci Ciapponi or Jolene Barry
Supplementary Authorizations: Allows you to teach this subject through 9th grade level if you have a valid teaching credential in another subject area. They require an additional 20 Lower division or 10 Upper division units, C or better.

12. Declaring and Advising Meetings
Make sure you declare PETE as your major, otherwise your course requirements will not show up on your Degree Progress Report in your Student Center.
Be prepared! Review the provided resources before asking questions. It helps us and you 

14. CME Scholarships
College of Communication and Education, which includes Kinesiology, offers scholarships each academic year.
Often times there are more scholarships than there are applicants.
Application due date is in February.
