1 5 Great Starter activities
Snippets 5 Great Starter activities WEATHER (Ratio & Proportion)

2 Weather Snowman The circumference of the snowman’s tummy is 1.5 times his height. If he is 86cm tall, what’s the circumference of his tummy? So, if the circumference of his tummy is 120cm, how tall is he? List some other possible pairs of height and circumference. What do you notice?

3 Weather Snowman’s Nose
The ratio of the length of the snowman’s nose to the length of the snowman’s arm is 3:7. If his nose is 12cm long, how long are his arms? If his arms are 42cm long, how long is his nose? Investigate other pairs of lengths. What if the ratio was 3:8?

4 Weather Rain On average, it rains 3 days in every week throughout the winter months. During 12 weeks, how many rainy days can we expect? What’s the ratio of wet to dry days? What proportion of the week is wet?

5 Weather Weekly Rainfall
The ratio of rainfall in two adjacent weeks was 2:3. If the total rainfall over the two weeks was 95mm, what was the rainfall each week? If the first week’s rainfall was 18mm, how much rain fell in the second week? If the second week’s rainfall was 42mm, how much rain fell in the first week?

6 Weather More Wet Weather! In four weeks the total rainfall was 80mm.
20% of the rain fell in Week 1 15% of the rain fell in Week 2 30% of the rain fell in Week 3 How many mm of rain fell in week 4? The ratio of rainfall in three consecutive weeks was 2:3:4. If 21mm of rain fell in the second week, how much rain fell in the other weeks? What was the total rainfall over the three weeks?
