Communication is the ability to exchange information from person to person with verbal or nonverbal cues. Three forms of commination Passive- not offering opposition when challenged or pressured Aggressive-hostile and unfriendly in the way one expresses oneself Assertive- direct and respectful in the way one presents their thoughts and ideas

Myths No one can stop a suicide Suicidal people keep their plans to themselves Facts If people in crisis get the help they need, they will probably never be suicidal again. Most suicidal people communicate their intent during week preceding their attempt.

Boys are more likely to commit suicide.

Suicide: Depression Depression is a normal reaction to life’s challenges. Teens with depression are at a greater risk of suicide.

Suicide: Drug Abuse Drugs Only increase the risk for teen suicide.
Will not help the pain of depression go away. not the solution for suicide.

Chores Homework Have a job (when old enough) Extracurricular school events

Sleep Disturbances Neglect of personal appearance Anger, aggression, moodiness Withdrawal from family and friends Unable to make decisions Appetite problems, losing or gaining weight

What to Avoid: Leave the person alone Counsel the person yourself
Debate whether suicide is right or wrong Act shocked

Call TALK Parents School counselors Tell a trusted adult

Resiliency- the ability to recover from illness, hardship, and other stressors

Remember: Suicide is a permanent alternative to a temporary problem

Assignment Write a letter to an individual who has helped you during a tough time, or inspired you. In this letter, please express to them how much they mean to you and what an impact they have made on your life. The letter needs to be a least 2 paragraphs in length, typed and double spaced.

Inspirational Letter 5 points for turning in paper with name
10 points for following directions (typed double spaced and letter 5pts each part) 10 points for two paragraphs with five or more sentences per paragraph 10 points for content in the letter. Did you identify what they mean to you and how they have inspired you as an individual.
