3 US in Puerto Rico Offered protection and some did feel they had to “help” the child like Puerto Ricans(Social Darwinism and Whiteman’s Burden) Puerto Ricans were happy at first because USA better than Spain Some wanted statehood and others wanted independence (still an issue)

4 Puerto Ricans were given the right of citizenship in 1917
US in Puerto Rico The US wanted control of this island because it was a good base to protect the canal they wanted to build in Panama Puerto Ricans were given the right of citizenship in 1917

5 Cuba becomes Protectorate
The US provided food & clothing,etc. The US forced Cuba to sign the Platt Amendment Cuba must stay independent US had the right to protect Cuba Cuba could not go into debt US could establish navy bases on the island

6 Cuba becomes a Protectorate
The main reason that the US wanted to control Cuba was sugar, tobacco, and public utilities.$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

8 Filipinos Rebel Philippine-American War
A some Filipinos rebelled and American soldiers then forced Filipinos to live in designated areas where sanitation was poor & food supply was low. The US appointed governor and let Filipinos elect lower house. Granted independence in July of 1946
