2 Human behavior views Question: Do people like to work or do they try to avoid it? Two theories : theory X and Theory Y seek to answer this fundamental question…

3 Theory x People do not like work. They try to avoid work.
People need direction. People want security, not responsibility.

4 Theory y People do not dislike work; work is as natural as play.
People will exhibit responsibility to accomplish goal. People accept and seek responsibility.

5 Styles of leadership: Democratic style: Resembles theory Y assumptions. Leaders place members on the same level as themselves. Creates a friendly environment. Authoritarian style: -resembles theory X assumptions. Leaders feel that subordinates need direction. Communcation is Key!

6 Lassies-faire style : not similar to either theory X or theory Y. Stands alone as a style of leadership. Engages in minimal influence.
