3. Punctuation
All languages have symbols that help people make sense of the words they speak and write.
For example, periods let a reader know where a thought ends and a new thought begins. I
In the English language, symbols such as these are called punctuation marks.
Punctuation marks tell readers to pause, to stop, or to read in a questioning, commanding or surprised tone.
Punctuation marks also connect certain ideas with other ideas or set ideas apart.

4. Punctuation: End Marks
Punctuation is an accepted set of symbols used to give specific directions to the reader. These are the most common punctuation marks:

5. Using the Period
Sentences, words and phrases may all be concluded with one of the three end marks .
These are the three end marks: the period (.), the question mark (?), and the exclamation mark (!). They usually indicate the end of a sentence.
The end mark used most often is the period (.).

7. Using the Period
Use a period to end a declarative sentence-that is, to end a statement of fact or opinion.
China is a country in Asia.
Use a period to end a imperative sentence-that is, to end a direction or command.
Listen closely to the tour guide.
Use a period after initials and most abbreviations.

8. Using the Question Mark
The question mark is most commonly used to end an interrogative sentence, one that ask a question requiring an answer.
Who turned in a paper with no name on it?
Sometimes a single word or a phrase is used to ask a question. In this situation, the word or phrase is punctuated with a question mark.
Where?

9. Using the exclamation Mark
Exclamation marks are used to punctuate sentences that show strong feelings.
Use an exclamation mark to end an exclamatory sentence-that is, to end a statement showing strong emotion.
Move away from the fire!
You surprised me!
Too many exclamation marks can make your writing too emotional. Be sure to use them sparingly.
