Have you seen a tornado before? How dark the sky looks! Go to the basement. The basement is the safest place in the house. Yes, we will wait downstairs in the playroom. The weather reporter says the tornado is near. Where do animals hide during a tornado? Pets must stay indoors! Turn and talk to your neighbor about what you notice about this paragraph. What do you notice about all the blue sentences? What do you notice about the orange sentence? What do you notice about all the red sentences? What do you notice about all the green sentences?

There are four kinds of sentences:
Declarative Interrogative Imperative Exclamatory Declarative Purpose: make a statement Example: I am tired of winter. End punctuation: (.) Imperative Purpose: tells or asks someone to do something. Example: Wear your scarf. End punctuation: (.) Interrogative Purpose: asks a question. Example: Is it snowing? End punctuation: (?) Exclamatory Purpose: expresses strong feeling Example: That poor cat looks frozen! End punctuation: (!)
