Specialized Cells Animal Only
2
Red Blood Cells Round, flattened discs Lack a nucleus
Hemoglobin is the protein inside red blood cells that carries oxygen Made inside your bone marrow
3
Muscle Cells Smooth muscles have single nuclei and no striations.
Cardiac and skeletal muscles have streaked fibers called striations Smooth muscles have single nuclei and no striations. Skeletal and smooth muscles have single nuclei.
4
Cardiac Muscle Has striations Tubular and branched shaped Uninucleated
Occurs in walls of heart Is involuntary (beats/works on its own)
5
Skeletal Muscle Has striations Tubular shaped multinucleated fibers
Is usually attached to skeleton Is voluntary (moves only when you tell it to)
6
Smooth Muscle Has narrow, tapered, rod-shaped cells Uninucleated
Arranged in sheets Occurs in walls of internal organs and blood vessels Is involuntary (moves/works without being told)
7
Basement membrane is made up of fibers.
Epithelial Cells Basement membrane is made up of fibers.

Squamous Epithelium Description: A single layer of flat cells. Looks like a platter of fried eggs "sunny-side up". Location: Air sacs (alveoli) of lungs, lines the inside of heart and blood vessels Function: Filtration, diffusion, osmosis
9
Cuboidal Epithelium Description: A single layer of roughly cube-shaped cells Location: Lines kidney tubules and the small ducts of many glands Function: Secretion and absorption
10
Columnar Epithelium Description: A single layer of tall rectangular cells Location: Lines the gall-bladder and most of the G.I. tract Function: Absorption and secretion
