Network Innovation Allowance Project: South East Smart Grid
Jingling Sun Data & Modelling National Grid
2
Our Agenda Today! Smart Grid Definition Smart Grid Features
South East Smart Grid Project Overview NIA Learning In the UK: We own the high-voltage electricity transmission system in England and Wales and operate the system across Great Britain We own and operate the high pressure gas transmission system in Britain, and Britain’s largest distribution business delivering gas to almost 11 million homes and businesses We have a number of unregulated businesses operating in related areas such as liquefied natural gas importation, land remediation, metering and interconnectors In the US: We distribute electricity to 3.4 million customers We provide natural gas to 3.5 million customers We currently own over 4,000MW of contracted generation Under a Management Services Agreement, we service 1.1 million customers of the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA)

Smart Grid Spectrum Smart Grid Definition:
An electricity network which can intelligently integrate the actions of all users connected to it for efficient and secure operation purpose. Models of Smart Grid Smart Transmission Smart Supply Side Smart Homes Smart Distribution Energy Clouds Smart Cities There is no currently accepted definition of what a smart grid actually is. But generally:An electricity network that can intelligently integrate the actions of all users connected to it - generators, consumers and those that do both - in order to efficiently deliver sustainable, economic and secure electricity supplies.
4
Smart Grid Features To utilise Demand Side Response
Communication capability across the whole supply chain To have self healing Grid Automation at high degrees is possible
5
Smart Grid Features To enable Wider participation in the grid (i.e. by SMEs) Interoperability between components Future growth is less challenging Easier use of the grid (i.e. by embedded generation) Uncertainty is managed
6
Transmission and Distribution Networks
South East Smart Grid Transmission and Distribution Networks working together
7
T&D Resources – What are they?
Transmission Distribution New Generation technologies New Embedded Generation technologies Conventional Generation Demand Side Response HVDC Links Energy Storage Transmission Assets (i.e. Transformers, SVC,…) Distribution Assets (i.e. Transformers, Capacitors, …)
8
South East Smart Grid’s Aims
To investigate the feasibility of relying on Distributed Connected Resources to support the transmission network To recommend necessary technical, commercial, and regulatory mechanisms which enable the roll-out of new service
9
Activities of the Project

South East Smart Grid’s learnings
How do we incorporate Smart Grid concepts into network planning? Move towards probabilistic planning Many more cases to analyse Ensuring consistency in a changing plan System Studies Service providers and contract period Future roll out and degree of confidence Operational Complexity Multiple revenue streams for one product (i.e. storage) Planning criteria Greater reliance on automated processes Managing constraint costs Develop a simulation and test environment System Operation South East Smart Grid gives us more tools for planning & operation
