Polynomials: Adding/Subtracting
Lesson 10-1
2
Math Vocabulary Review
Polynomial: A math statement with two or more individual terms Degree of polynomial: The highest [variable] exponent Standard form: when polynomial terms are in order by decreasing degree/exponent, and no terms have the same degree
3
Review of Naming Polynomials
Naming a polynomial is based on 2 factors: 1) degree 2) # of terms Ex. 7x³ - 3x + 1
4
Adding Polynomials When we + polynomials… …we + like/matching terms (2x² - 3x + 4) + (3x² + 2x – 3) like/matching terms based on variable exponent
5
Adding Polynomials Method 2 – Match: Method 1 – Stack: 2x² - 3x + 4
(2x² - 3x + 4) + (3x² + 2x – 3) Method 1 – Stack: 2x² - 3x + 4 3x² + 2x – 3 (2x² - 3x + 4) + (3x² + 2x – 3) Method 2 – Match: 2x² - 3x x² + 2x – 3 5x² - x + 1
6
Adding Polynomials When adding: (5x² + 4x – 7) + (-4x² + 8x – 1) *drop parenthesis, clean up double signs 5x² + 4x – 7 – 4x² + 8x – 1
7
Subtracting Polynomials
When we (-) polynomials… …we (-) like/matching terms *AFTER distributing the (–) to the 2nd polynomial term (7x³ - 3x + 1) – (x³ + 4x² - 2) 7x³ - 3x + 1 – x³ - 4x² + 2
8
Subtracting Polynomials
(7x³ - 3x + 1) – (x³ + 4x² - 2) 7x³ - 3x + 1 – x³ - 4x² + 2 Method 1 – Stack: 7x³ - 3x + 1 – x³ - 4x² + 2 (7x³ - 3x + 1) – (x³ + 4x² - 2) 7x³ - 3x + 1 – x³ - 4x² + 2 Method 2 – Match: 7x³ - 3x – x³ - 4x² + 2
9
Subtracting Polynomials
(3x² + 4x – 1) - (-x² - x – 2) 3x² + 4x – 1 + x² + x + 2
10
Practice (4x + 2) + (x -1) (4x³ - 6x² + 3x – 1) + (8x³ + 4x² - 2x + 3)
(-2y² + 8) – (3y² - 4y – 6)
