What it is: MedCenter System ( Cost: $ What it is used for: This mid-tech assistive device helps those with intellectual disabilities, dementia, traumatic brain injury or any other disability where memory is deficient. This can be an incredible device to foster independence and functional skills. Useful at home or during travel. Ease of operation: Very easy to use, but needs to be set up by someone who can read directions, and set up the alarm clock to the individual persons’ medication schedule. Reviews: Pros: Four voice alarms; individually programmable; color coded; large print. Cons: Does not retain settings if battery dies; person needs to push button to open the lid; nothing prevents person from taking two days of pills at once. What it is: Dress EZ Low Tech Dressing Device ( Cost: $ 8.50 What it is used for: Long handle shoehorn and helpful dressing aid. Helps those with low muscle strength, arthritis, poor range of motion, and difficulties with fine motor skills, to get their shoes on or extend your reach into high closets in selecting clothing. Useful at home, community settings such as local pool or fitness center. Ease of operation: Very easy to use, with a big soft foam handle for better grip. What it is: Braille Timer Cost: $ What it is used for: This mid-tech assistive device helps those with print disabilities, especially visual impairment, by having braille on the numbers of the dial of a timer. This can be an incredible device to foster independence and functional skills as it also keeps track of cooking time or any other timing the person needs. Useful at home, work, school, community outings. Ease of operation: Very easy to use, just feel the braille number you want to set it at, turn the dial, and listen for the bell to signal the time is up. Reviews: easy to operate, low cost. This can be an incredible device to foster independence and functional skills as it also keeps track of the readings and has Bluetooth capacity for transmission to a computer. Useful at home. Ease of operation: Very easy to use, but needs to be set up by someone who can read directions, and set up the alarm clock to the individual persons’ medication schedule. What it is: Ableware Scooper Bowl and Plate Cost: $ What it is used for: This low-tech assistive device helps those with physical disabilities, fine motor coordination difficulties, and those who are blind, to eat independently without pushing their food off their plate. Also good for those with only one functioning hand. This can be an incredible device to foster independence and functional skills to aid in feeding oneself. Can be used at home, school or community restaurant. Ease of operation: Very easy to use, suction cup base keeps bowl/plate in place, curved edge helps to get food onto spoon, Reviews: Bowl and plate work well, but suction cup does not work well and the plate gets a bit warped in the dishwasher.
