2 Preferred Teaching Setting
I teach at an English Kindergarten located in Bundang, which is nearby Seoul. It is one of the renowned institute in this area due the learning environment. Student from age 5 to 7 are able to enroll. The kindergarten offers natural English learning environment along with the ‘Nuri program’ which is the national common curriculum for kindergartens in Korea. The students attending this kindergarten have strong self-confidence toward English. Therefore, they are not afraid to have an English conversation. I am currently responsible for 8 students who are 6years old. At the kindergarten, I am responsible of English reading, speaking and listening classes with my 8 students. Since my students have attended this kindergarten for the past year, they are capable of simple conversations in English. For speaking class, I promote free talking environment within a given subject. For reading class, I use the Oxford Reading Tree and the Scholastic Reader series. Having a communicative class, all reading classes are accompanied with interactive activities. Moreover, for listening, storytelling is done in a relaxing environment. Having a nice rug on the ground, we will all sit down on the carpet to listen to the story books. Also, listening is also an interactive class. After each storybook, students will perform a small play related to the story which they have heard. Being their homeroom teacher, I am also accountable for their individual safety and daily emotional conditions. Since they are children, close care and attention is always needed.

3 Other than the basic teacher’s duties, I am responsible with the relation building with the parents. English should not only be used in classrooms; parents are responsible to continue using English even at home. Therefore, I try to motivate parents to have daily English conversations with their children. Since the kindergarten is a well-known institute, the structure of the classes are quite stable. If possible, it will be more effective for the teachers to select their own textbooks according to the level of the students. However, since such condition might be difficult to be satisfied, I will have to develop activities outside of the textbook. Rather than hoping to have the big structure of the kindergarten to be changed, I will utilize the given conditions to facilitate more communicative learning environment for my students. Moreover, if possible parents’ participation in class observation is more than welcome. Having parents view the learning environment, more ideas on how parents can help out in their children’s English can be taught in-depth.
