2 Women in the 20th Century In 1900 it was socially acceptable for single women to work. Percentage of women in the workforce: 1901 = 13% 1914 = 21% Women worked as domestic servants, in factories or mills, and in sweatshops. By 1920's women became more educated. How would this affect the types of jobs they worked? Women were able to get White Collar jobs. Women were almost always paid less than men in the same position.

3 Suffrage Suffrage – Fighting for the right vote
By 1900 some women were able to vote in selected municipalities around Canada. 1916 – First women allowed to vote at the provincial level (Manitoba). 1918 – Women were given the right to vote and run for office in federal elections.

4 Canada and the British Empire
“The Sun never sets on the British Empire”. In 1900 Canada was still a part of the British Empire. While Canada controlled its own government, they still depended on GB for defense and external affairs. In 1909 the British Empire contained 20% of the world's land and 23% of the world's population.

5 Boer War In 1899 the British went to war with Dutch settlers in Africa (Afikaners) over gold. GB wanted Canada's help.

6 Boer War Results British Canadians wanted to stay close to GB; French Canadians wanted to break from GB. PM Laurier officially refused to order the Canadian military to South Africa. Laurier allowed volunteers to serve in the British military. 7000 Canadians went to Africa; 270 died. Canada sent Red Cross volunteers. Accompanied by a wave of Canadian Patriotism.
