2 AFRIMETS, a historical review
The idea of a greater African metrology system was conceptulised in Following a presentations in Accra in February 2005 and at the SIM General Assembly in 2006 by Dr Musarurwa, a workshop was held in Midrand SA in March 2006 under the auspices of NEPAD, PTB and SADCMET A second workshop was held in July The workshop was attended by a large number of interested parties and other RMOs

3 AFRIMETS, a historical review
The Inaugural General Assembly meeting of AFRIMETS was held at the premises of NEPAD in Midrand, South Africa 1-2 July 2007 During the two days the MoU was finalized, the first Chair, Vice-chairs and Executive committee members were elected July 2008 the second General assembly was held in Tunis.

The Membership AFRIMETS consists of; -Principal Members (Sub-RMOs) -Ordinary Members (NMIs, LMIs or countries not part of a sub-RMO) -Associate Members (NMIs, LMIs outside Africa) -Observer Members (All organisations/bodies interested in Metrology)

AFRIMETS Structures are in place Working Programme for includes: 5 Regional comparisons 1 Regional Proficiency Testing scheme Legal Metrology work and action plan Fund raising activities Sub regional metrology workshops Quality WG and first TC1 WG meetings to be held Dec 2008 in Kenya

11 Aims and tasks of the WGs
Four major functions: Assist the development of technical capabilities at member NMIs Assist established laboratories with technical issues Organise PT, Pilot and Key comparisons PT schemes to test and improve capabilities Pilot studies to determine the level of readiness to conduct a KC, NMIs and other laboratories KCs to prove and underwrite capabilities, CMC claims Conduct the intra RMO CMC review process

12 The Greater Role of AFRIMETS in Africa
In addition to measurement equivalence and harmonization of Legal Metrology activities Liaison with the AU/NEPAD Liaison with other RMOs and especially a GULF Metrology programme Establishment of Metrology Infrastructure Coordination of donor funding

13 Latest Happenings AFRIMETS was accepted as the RMO representing Africa, CIPM October 2008 PTB is assisting the secretariat and meetings UNIDO Assistance project approved, € Associate membership of the CGPM Quality system reviews Support for meetings Support for comparisons Support for the secretariat The dti (SA) promised R800k for assistance Already two comparisons workshops have been held (temp, voltage)
