3. Giovanni da Verrazano
- from Italy, but working for France
- looking for a short water route to Asia
o Northwest Passage
o like Columbus
- didn’t find it, but went back to Europe 
saying he had
o  Pamlico Sound
- unsuccessful

5. Hernando de Soto
- from Spain
- looking for gold
- crossed into NC around 1540
- primarily in the mountains
- treated Native Americans badly
- died and was buried in the Mississippi 
River
- never found the gold

6. Juan Pardo
- Portuguese soldier in the Spanish army
- also looking for gold
- expedition began in 1569
- found no riches
- gave up, went back to Spain after a few 
years

7. Walter Raleigh
- from England
- late 1500s, England wanted to look for 
riches
- Queen Elizabeth I sent Sir Humphrey 
Gilbert and Sir Walter Raleigh to find NW 
Passage
- 1578- expedition halted by storms
- 2nd try- Queen Elizabeth wouldn’t let 
Raleigh go
o dream
o Gilbert was lost at sea
- next year, Raleigh sent out first of 
several expeditions
o first English attempts to settle the New 
World
o led to the “Lost Colony”
