1 FAQ’s About the Church of Christ
What difference does the name of the church make?

2 Names Are Important Kids Pets Boats Products Lucifer, Hitler, Jezebel

3 Would you buy these products?

4 Names are important to God.
Abraham, Genesis 17:1-7 God changed Abram to Abraham – “Father of a multitude” Isaac was not yet born – God reaffirms promises from Genesis 12 The Bible reveals how God fulfilled the promises to Abraham.

5 Names are important to God.
Jacob, Genesis 32:22-28 God changed Jacob to Israel – Prince with God Israel was the father of the heads of the 12 tribes of the nation of Israel Christ came from the tribe of Judah.

6 Names are important to God.
God’s people, Isaiah 62:1-2 God promises that His people will be called by a new name which He will choose. Acts 11:26 And when he had found him, he brought him to Antioch. So it was that for a whole year they assembled with the church and taught a great many people. And the disciples were first called Christians in Antioch.

7 Are there different kinds of Christians?
What kind of Christian are you? Baptist-Christian Methodist-Christian Catholic-Christian Etc. 1 Corinthians 1:10-13, 3:1-4; Romans 8:6-7

8 Why the different names?
John 8:32 And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” John 17:17 Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth. 2 John 9-11, John 8:31 The names exist because of doctrinal differences Baptist name meant a kind of doctrine, Lutheran name meant a kind of doctrine, Pentecostal meant a kind of doctrine Used to fight tooth and nail over these differences Debates would be held Viewed as lost those outside their fellowships

9 What should the church be called?
Biblical names for the church: "the church of God" (1 Corinthians 1:2) "church of the firstborn" (Hebrews 12:23) "churches of Christ" (Romans 16:16) "Body of Christ" (Colossians 1:24) "Bride of Christ" (Revelation 21:2) "House of God" (1 Timothy 3:15)

10 Scripture never refers to the church as:
Baptist Catholic Lutheran Presbyterian Methodist Seventh Day Adventist Mormon Pentecostal Etc.

11 The Seed Principle Luke 8:4-8, 11 Genesis 1:11-12
1 Peter 1:23-25; Acts 11:19-26

12 The Right Attitude I ask that people make no reference to my name; let them call themselves Christians, not Lutherans. What is Luther? After all, the teaching is not mine. Neither was I crucified for anyone. St. Paul, in I Corinthians 3, would not allow the Christians to call themselves Pauline or Petrine but Christian. How then should I – poor stinking maggot-fodder than I am – come to have people call the children of Christ by my wretched name? Not so, my dear friends; let us abolish all party names and call ourselves Christian. Martin Luther, “A Sincere Admonition to All Christians to Guard Against Insurrection and Rebellion” (1522), Luther’s Works, Vol. 45, p. 70.

13 Names Matter Acts 4:12 Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.” It is Jesus’ church, Matthew 16:18. He bought it with His blood, Acts 20:28. He is its head, Colossians 1:18. Let’s be united, Eph. 4:3

14 Be Saved Today! Believe – John 8:24 Confess – Matthew 10:32-33
Repent – Luke 13:3 Be Baptized – Mark 16:16 Be Faithful – Revelation 2:10
