How many of you see The Rotary Foundation as depicted in this slide?
While The Rotary Foundation can appear to be quite complicated to most – it can also be quite simple – once you understand it. I am going to talk to you today about the Annual Programs Fund
3
Now for my next question – does this remind you of anything
Now for my next question – does this remind you of anything? Well, to many Rotarians in your club and district, this is how they perceive the Annual Programs Fund – as a black hole. Money goes in – but never comes out – or it’s always going over to another country and they never see it.
4
ANNUAL PROGRAMS FUND …DEMYSTIFIED
So we’re going to take a few minutes to give you an overview about the Annual Programs Fund and all that it accomplishes in the world and how it benefits you!
5
EREY Is everyone familiar with this Rotary acronym? If you’re not, you should be. It stands for Every Rotarian, Every Year. Simply, it means that we actively engage EVERY ROTARIAN to participate in their Rotary Foundation, EVERY YEAR. And the simplest way to do that is to contribute to the Annual Programs Fund – in some dollar amount and participate in Foundation programs. I like to think that when you join a Rotary club, you become a member of that club, but when you become active in The Rotary Foundation, that’s when you become a Rotarian! When you participate – you are changing the world for the better, that’s how you make a difference.
6
Mission Statement The mission of The Rotary Foundation is to enable Rotarians to advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through the improvement of health, the support of education, and the alleviation of poverty. Read the Mission Statement – so when you contribute to the Foundation, you help the Foundation fulfill its mission.
7
Implementing The Rotary Foundation Mission via APF
Three Key Programs: Humanitarian Grants Program Educational Programs PolioPlus Annual Programs Fund contributions support all three key programs! When you contribute to the Annual Programs Fund, you directly support three key program areas: Humanitarian Grants, Educational Programs and PolioPlus. Yes – your contributions support all three and I’ll show you how shortly.
8
Three Needs, Three Ways Rotarian contributions fund Rotary Foundation programs. Gifts can be made to three funds: For support today To secure tomorrow We just talked about annual giving supporting all Foundation programs but gifts made to the Permanent Fund or the PolioPlus program are generally restricted for certain purposes and can only be used for the stated purpose. For example, if you make a contribution to Rotary’s US$200 Million Challenge, it can only be used for PolioPlus. If you make a Permanent Fund gift to The Rotary Centers or perhaps an endowed scholarship fund – it can only be used for those purposes. But when you give to the Annual Programs Fund – you support all Foundation programs. In essence, your contributions to the Annual Programs Fund are multi-purpose.
9
For projects/programmes identified by Rotarians…
Annual Programs Fund Solicit Rotarians… For projects/programmes identified by Rotarians… ...And administered by Rotarians So if the Annual Programs Fund is multi-purpose, then why is it so unique? This is an “all Rotarian” venture. You are the contributors, you are identifying needs in your communities or working with an international partner on a Matching Grant to fulfill a need in another country – and you are watching over those projects to make sure that the money you contribute is spent wisely. There isn’t anyone in Evanston spending your contributions – but we are stewarding your contributions and then spending the money where you tell us to spend it. If your club or district identifies a candidate for the Ambassadorial Scholarship program – you are telling the Foundation how you want to spend the contributions.

Goal Setting Goals Should Be: Study club’s past giving
Measurable Achievable Challenging Shared Time Specific Study club’s past giving Set goal higher than previous year Ask every member to participate Goal setting is the key to assisting Rotary clubs measure progress in reaching The Rotary Foundation’s overall fundraising goals. Each club is asked to support their president and president-elect in setting and reaching fundraising goals. This will ensure that sufficient funds are available for both our district projects and TRF’s international projects. Does $100 from Every Rotarian, Every Year seem easy to achieve, or daunting? Think back to our last slide… we spend $18 billion just on snacks!
11
TRF-DIRECT Automatic deductions from checking/savings account or recurring credit card contribution Reduces demands on club treasurers Gives districts & clubs a fast start in annual fundraising efforts Average Gift: $336!!! Many clubs are not including a line item on their dues statement for contributions to the Foundation – with an “opt-out’ provision. Any clubs already doing this? Another way to achieve your club’s fundraising goals is through TRF-DIRECT. Can someone explain what TRF-DIRECT is? TRF-DIRECT enables Rotarians to automatically transfer funds from their checking accounts, savings account or credit card to The Rotary Foundation. Convenient and cost-effective, the program allows donors to direct predetermined amounts to the Annual Programs Fund on a monthly, quarterly or annual basis. By the way, the average TRF-DIRECT annual contribution in North America is $336! Many of our new Paul Harris Society Members – those that choose to give a minimum $1,000 per year to The Rotary Foundation – enjoy the convenience of TRF-DIRECT. And, it’ll make your club treasurer’s life easier! Are you aware of a Paul Harris Society in your district? How is it being promoted in your district and in your club?

Remember the Black Hole where Money goes in – but never comes out
Remember the Black Hole where Money goes in – but never comes out? There are reasons that perception exists – it’s because Rotarians aren’t telling their stories. They’re not sharing all the good things they do with their contributions to the Annual Programs Fund. How many of you know the details of a Matching Grant that your club participated in? Do you know where it was, what it accomplished, how many people were helped? Do you know the names of all the Ambassadorial Scholars from in your district? Rotary is the best-kept secret and it shouldn’t be because we have the most unique funding cycle of any charity in existence that allows for 100% of your contributions to support Foundation programs. Every penny is spent on programs that what… Rotarians contribute, for programs they identify and administer. That funding cycle is called the SHARE program.

Understanding APF/Share*
2008 2009 2009 2010 2010 2011 2011 2012 2012 2013 2013 2014 2014 2015 50% World Fund 50% District Designated Funds (DDF) Matching Grants Individual Grants Group Study Exchange (GSE) Health, Hunger and Humanity Grants (3-H) Rotary Centers for International Studies Fifty percent (50%) of all contributions come back to our district through District Designated Funds (DDF) in three years to spend on educational and humanitarian programs chosen by us; even grants that may be used for projects in our local community. Through the SHARE system, our contributions to the Foundation help both the locally and globally. Here’s an example: Year 1: Our district raised $100,000 in Year 2: $50,000 is available in DDF for programs we select. Year 3: Spending takes place in So Contributions made in become available in Programs funded through District Designated Funds include: Matching Grants; District Simplified Grants; Ambassadorial Scholars; Rotary Centers for Int’l Studies; additional Group Study Exchanges, etc. The other 50% goes to the World Fund and is used to fund other Foundation programs in which we can participate, such as GSE and Matching Grants. (Each district receives one GSE that is funded from the World Fund.) The Rotary Foundation provides a 1:1 match for District Designated Funds (or SHARE) contributions and a 0.5:1 match for new cash contributions for Matching Grants. And, districts can request up to 20 percent of District Designated Funds (DDF) for a grant to support multiple projects locally or internationally. Please note that distribution of funds will differ for districts participating in the Future Visions Pilot Program. Rotarians In Action Through SHARE you can:
Sponsor an Ambassadorial Scholar applicant to compete at the district level. Identify a future GSE team member or University Teacher Participate in a Matching Grant or bigger yet, 3-H Grant Provide media equipment to your local library with DSG Spend 20% on PolioPlus and get a .50 cent World Fund match. There are all kinds of ways Rotarians can spend the contributions they give. If you can dream it you can do it. If you think that the money is always going overseas – it’s because you haven’t thought of a way to spend it in your own community. If the needs are so compelling in your community – why aren’t you looking for an international club to partner with – they would love to participate in your program, but if they don’t know about it, how can they help?
15
TELL THE STORY! Rotarians In Action
The Annual Programs Fund Aftermath – TELL THE STORY! Every Rotarian should be telling the story about the good they are doing in the world Every Year. If you tell the story – you will create awareness about your Rotary club. When you create awareness, you get new members! Everyone wants to be associated with a success story – including Bill and Melinda Gates! Every Rotarian should be looking for opportunities to help strengthen local projects/programs within their own communities. When you publicize your DSGs effectively, you can attract new members to your club. Your district has not participated in Volunteer Service Grants or 3-H Grants so in the interest of time, I am not going to discuss these programs, but you might want to look into these programs in the future. Let’s to talk briefly about DSGs. What kind of DSGs have clubs in your district participated in? DSGs help out your local communities and create awareness about your Rotary clubs. Every Rotarian should be looking for opportunities to help strengthen local projects/programs within their own communities. When you publicize your DSGs effectively, you can attract new members to your club.

Donor Recognition Any $$$ = EREY US$100 = RFSM
Contribute annually to APF: Any $$$ = EREY US$100 = RFSM US$1000 = PHF and/or PHS OK, so you’ve done such a good job at telling the story, that the Foundation’s Trustees are going to award you with recognition for your generosity. Any amount entitles you to become an EREY, US$100 – Rotary Foundation Sustaining Member and US$1,000 = aPaul Harris Fellow or Paul Harris Society member. And, if everyone in your club participates, then your club can be recognized with special banner recognition.

Paul Harris Fellows NOT A PHF? You get credits to “keep”
PHF? You get Recognition Points to “give away” I am going to try to demystify Paul Harris Fellows for you by keeping it simple. Until you personally contribute a total of US$1,000 to the APF, PP or a Matching Grant or someone transfers Foundation Recognition Points from funds they contributed to get you to the Paul Harris Fellow level, you get “PHF credits” in your account. Once your credits add up to $1,000, you become a Paul Harris Fellow. Once you become a Paul Harris Fellow and you continue contributing, you then earn Foundation Recognition Points for every dollar you contribute. It’s sort of works like a frequent flyer miles program. If you earn enough frequent flyer miles, you get to take a free trip. In the Foundation, if you earn enough FRPs, you get to name others as Paul Harris Fellows for each $1,000 worth of FRPs you earn. It’s like a companion fare, you become a PHF and you get to take another PHF with you. If your club contributes or holds a fundraiser and they contribute the money to APF, PP or MG, they earn FRPs to name members of the club PHFs or use the FRPs to match your contributions so that you can become a PHF must faster – and get on the fast track to naming others PHFs. It’s really simple, but many people make it complicated because they don’t understand how they work.

MAJOR DONOR RECOGNITION

PolioPlus – Rotary’s US$200 Million Challenge
Supporting APF can help Eradicate Polio and fulfill our promise to the children of the world. For a generation now, Rotary has been in the forefront of the worldwide effort to eradicate polio. We received a great partner in this effort – the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation who contributed US$200 Million to TRF because they believe that Rotary can eradicate polio. Many of you may not know that there are three strains of the polio virus. We eradicated the Type 2 Polio and are greatly reducing the numbers of Type 1 and Type 3 viruses in the remaining polio endemic countries (Nigeria, India, Pakistan and Afghanistan). Each club was asked to contribute U$1,000 to PolioPlus over the next three years to help us meet the US$100 million Gates Challenge. Thus far, we have been able to raise $31 million in matching funds. I hope all of your clubs participating in this effort. Did you know that your contributions to the Annual Programs Fund can also support PolioPlus through your District Designated Funds?

The Rotary Foundation “If you can dream it, you can do it.” Walt Disney Paul Harris Fellow MAKE DREAMS REAL! We contribute! We identify needs! We decide how to spend the money! Can you tell me any other organization that does that? Ladies and gentlemen – this is why The Rotary Foundation is Our Foundation. As Paul Harris Fellow, Walt Disney said, “if we can dream it, we can do it.” Let’s MAKE DREAMS REAL – BECAUSE WE CAN! THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT FOR YOUR ROTARY FOUNDATION! EVERY DOLLAR HELPS!
