Let’s first look at a short passage.

7 Please read the following passage first:
Everyone has an experience they would rather forget. Some are embarrassing or moving, and some teach us a lesson. Here is a story of mine. Last Sunday I went fishing. After setting up my fishing rod with bait, I sat down on the bank of the lake. But two hours later, I didn’t catch any fish. I got very angry and began to pack up my stuff(收拾东西), preparing to go back home. Just then, I saw an old man sitting near me. To my surprise, his basket was full of fish, so I went over to him, wanting to know why. “Excuse me, but how long have you sat here?” I asked. “About four hours,” he answered. “Four hours?” I couldn’t believe my ears.

8 “Yes. It’s very important to be patient,” the old man said
“Yes. It’s very important to be patient,” the old man said. “ Don’t consider fishing a tiring sport. Just enjoy it.” Suddenly, I understand what he said. I must learn to be patient. Then I sat there and waited for fish patiently. I felt a fish touch the bait, but I didn’t move and waited for the right moment to reel it in(卷收钓鱼线). At last, I caught it. This made me very happy. In the following six hours, I caught over 10 fish. On my way home, I thought what had happened on the bank. I gradually realized that the secret of success was patience.

13 Suggestions: What should we pay attention to when writing a title?
We should use a noun phrase or a sentence as a title. 2.The first letter of every word in a title should be written in a capital(大写) letter except articles(冠词), prepositions(介词) and conjunctions(连词). 3. The number of a title had better not be more than 10 words.

14 2. How to summarize a narrative:
Skill: Combination of five elements要素串联法 What Who When Where What to learn was taught a lesson by an old man the writer and an old man × going fishing last Sunday × on the bank of the lake Patience is important. Patience is the secret of success.

15 We may begin like these:
1.The passage is about the writer’s unforgettable lesson from an old man. 2.The writer tells us about his unforgettable lesson from an old man. 3.The story is about the writer who was taught an unforgettable lesson by an old man. 4.The author tells us that he was taught an unforgettable lesson by an old man.

16 My version for the summary
In this passage, the writer mainly tells us his experience of fishing and was taught an unforgettable lesson by an old man. He knew the importance of patience and finally got some fish.(33 words)

17 We may write like these:
3. How to write a transitional sentence We may write like these: 1. It occurs to me that a similar story of mine happened 3 years ago and taught me a lesson. 2. I had a similar experience at one time, too. 3. As far as I am concerned, I have a similar experience . 4. I have such a similar experience, too. 5. I have a similar experience to the writer’s. 6. I also have a similar experience.

18 My version for the transitional sentence:
I also have a similar experience about being patient. I would like to share it with you.

19 Take waiting for a bus as an example:
4.Make up your similar story: Skill: Combination of five elements要素串联法 Take waiting for a bus as an example: What Who When Where What to learn waited for a bus I when going to school at the bus stop Patience is important

20 I have a similar experience
I have a similar experience. Once I waited for the bus at the stop for 30 minutes, no bus came. I couldn’t wait any longer and decided to walk to school. But no sooner had I left than the bus arrived. I thought if I had waited for one more minute, I would have caught it. If I wanted to take the next bus, I would have to wait for another 30 minutes. Only then did I realize the importance of patience. Being impatient will waste all the efforts that we have made. Patience also plays an important part in our study and work. With it we can achieve greater success.

25 A boy found an eagle’s egg and he put it in the nest of a hen
A boy found an eagle’s egg and he put it in the nest of a hen. The eagle hatched and thought he was a chicken. He grew up doing what chickens do—scratching for food and flying short distances. It was a dull life. Gradually the eagle grew older and bitter. One day he and his chicken friends saw a beautiful bird soaring on the currents of air, high above the mountains “Oh, I wish I could fly like that!” said the eagle. The chicken replied, “Don’t give it another thought. That’s the mighty(强大的) eagle, the king of all birds—you could never be like him!” And the eagle didn’t give it another thought. He went on cackling and complaining about life. He died thinking he was a chicken My friends, you too were born an eagle. The Creator intended you to be an eagle, so don't listen to the chickens!

26 Main Points: Why did an eagle live like a chicken?
What was his wish when he saw an eagle soaring high ? 3. How did other chickens react to his wish? 4. What was his fate like in the end?
