2
Warm Up 9/6/16 1. In the the Cincinnati Reds scored the following numbers of runs against the San Diego Padres: 2, 6, 5, 2, 4, 6, 6, 10, 3, 19, 4, 4, 2, 3. If 19 is the outlier, describe how it affects the mean and standard deviation. 2. The maker of a gas additive claims that the additive will increase a car’s gas mileage by at least 5 mpg. Among 35 cars that were treated with the additive, the average increase in mileage was 4.3 mpg with a standard deviation of 1.6 mpg. Should the maker’s claim be accepted? (Is this a z-test or a standard normal value?)

Warm Up 9/7/16 3. Town officials in Laurelville want to build a new fire station on Northern Avenue. A local newspaper surveys residents and finds that 56% plan to vote YES and 44% plan to vote No. The survey’s margin of error is + 4%. Does the survey show the majority’s preference? What is the sample size? moe = 1 √n 4. Scores on a test are normally distributed with a mean of 75 and a standard deviation of 8. Estimate the probability of x > 87.

Warm Up 9/8/16 What percent of the normal distribution curve
is shaded? 6. A battery manufacturer develops a new battery that it claims is an improvement on its existing product. A research group compares the battery life for 20 assorted devices on the new battery and the old battery, and finds that the devices run an average of 20% longer on the new battery. State the treatment, the treatment group, and the control group. Also, what would be the null hypothesis?
