6 The slope we are studying is associated with the graph of a line.

7 What is your Definitions of SLOPE?
Allow students time to copy definitions. May need to review that a ratio is a comparison of numbers

8 SLOPE is… • The tilt or inclination of a line
• The ratio of vertical change to horizontal change. • The change in ‘y’ over the change in ‘x’

9 Vertical Change (rise) Horizontal Change (run)
To determine a slope: Vertical Change (rise) Horizontal Change (run)

10 How many points do you need to draw a line?
• One? • Two? • Three or more? Quiz students by a show of hand

11 Practice problem #1 Graph: (3, 2) and (-1,-1)

12 Draw a line through the points

13 Remember we are finding the following ratio:
Let’s find the slope of our line: Remember we are finding the following ratio: Vertical or Rise Horizontal Run Find the slope

14 Vertical Change or the Rise

15 Horizontal Change or the Run

16 = Vertical Rise Horizontal Run 3 4
May need to remind students that a ratio is a comparison of two numbers Reminder: A ratio is a comparison of two numbers
