Types of Production There are three types of production: Primary
Secondary Tertiary

Primary Production Involves using the earth’s natural resources, this may include: Extraction (taking) of raw materials from the land or sea Growing items eg fruit, trees Examples include farming, fishing, mining, forestry and oil drilling

Secondary Production Involves taking raw materials and turning them into finished and semi-finished products Secondary involves manufacturing and construction Examples include building and construction, coach building and baking

Tertiary Production This involves providing services to consumers or to other businesses Examples include: Retailing Banking Hairdressing Insurance Health care

Secondary – manufactures goods using raw materials from primary production Tertiary – provides services to consumers and other businesses

Trends in UK and Ireland
The importance of each sector can be measured by the number of people employed: About 2% of workers are employed in primary production About 22% of workers are employed in secondary production About 76% of workers are employed in tertiary production
