5 FOOD PLAN BASICS Modified Mediterranean approach.
Choose foods that are protein-rich and phytonutrient-packed. Count servings of food, not calories. 5 meals and snacks daily. Limit sugars, refined carbohydrates, grains.

7 MEAL PROTEIN 3 servings per day Serving size: Palm size

8 SNACK PROTEIN 2 servings per day Serving Size: ½ palm size 1 dairy serving can replace 1 snack protein 1 serving of nuts or seeds

9 PROTEINS - EXAMPLES Fish/Shellfish: salmon, halibut, herring, sardines, tuna, cod, etc. Wild game: venison, elk, buffalo, bison, ostrich Beef and Lamb Poultry (skinless): chicken, turkey, Cornish hens, quail, etc. Eggs (2 large = palm sized serving) Cheeses: Cottage cheese (6 oz.); Low-fat cheese: cheddar, Colby Jack, mozzarella, Swiss, etc. (2 oz.); Parmesan/Romano (6 tbsp. grated) Vegetable sources: tofu, tempeh, seitan, veggie burgers

10 NUTS - EXAMPLES Almonds: 16 whole; Brazil nuts: 6 whole; Cashews: 14 whole Coconut (unsweetened): 3 tbsp. grated Hazelnuts: 14 whole; peanuts: 20 whole, pecans: 10 halves; pine nuts: 1 ½; pistachios: 2 tbsp.; walnuts: 10 halves Seeds: Pumpkin, sesame, sunflower (2 tbsp.) Nut/seed butters (from above list): 1 tbsp.

11 DAIRY – EXAMPLES Milk – butter, cow, goat, unsweetened almond, coconut, oat, hemp: 4 ounces Yogurt – plain dairy, Greek or coconut: 4 ounces

Larger, loosely packed: 1 cup

Weight/volume equivalence depends on how tight it is packed Spinach: about 3-4 cups = 5 oz.
