2
Ao2 Device- Alliteration
Exposition- ‘middle of March when the mosquitoes…’ This line opens the story in a very whimsical and fairy tale manner due to the alliteration of the ‘m’ sound in ‘middle’, ‘March’, and ‘mosquitoes’. This is then contrasted by ‘reign of terrorism’, revealing an underlying tone of fear in the story.
3
Ao2 Device – Star Motif ‘A small star shone down upon him’ – The star is representative of hope, specifically of escaping the closed community Anil lives in. ‘His parents would not even stop for a second to gape a star’ – His parents don’t have dreams and aspirations, they are confined by the limitations of their village. “But he did.” – Short sentence emphasising the difference between Anil and his parents. He has a youthful ambition that they lack.
4
Ao2 Device- Personification
Anil is presented to have a childish view on his surroundings, this is shown by ‘it was a tree that ate little children’. This also shows that Anil is easily influenced by what he hears, even if it sounds far-fetched. The tree is also personified through ‘The tree must have spat out the woman’s bones’. This emphasises Anil’s fear and how he lets the little things control him.
5
Ao2 Device- Emotive Language
‘clutching his mouth with both hands and silencing the sobs that wracked his little body” The verbs “clutching” and “wracked” illustrate his loss of hope and childlike innocence, as he has been traumatised by what he has seen. Also the alliteration of ‘silencing the sobs’ emphasises the melancholy he feels from what he just witnessed.
6
Ao2 Device- Presentation of the father
Anil’s father is presented as controlling – “Seized by a pair of hands”. The verb “seized” suggests Anil is scared of his Father’s strength, and that there is an element of danger. However Anil is also reliant on his father – “Clutched onto his father’s shirt”. The possessive pronoun ‘his’ emphasises how much he needs his father, and Anil’s desperation and vulnerability. butts
7
Ao2 Device- Juxtaposition
Anil’s father is presented to be a ‘burley man’ to his family, implying that he is cruel and abusive to his family. However is also shown to be a ‘timid mouse to the headman’ which suggests that he is scared of authority, emphasising that he is a weak character who may appear brutal but is shown to be highly vulnerable. The use of the juxtaposition highlights the fact that Anil’s father respects the hierarchal society, and is frightened of the consequences if he doesn’t obey.
8
Ao2 Device - Symbolism Although Anil’s father is presented as cruel and distant figure, he is described to give Anil his ‘outreached hand’ which is symbolic of him wanting to start a relationship with his son. Furthermore it shows that Anil’s father recognises that Anil is still vulnerable and in need of his father’s protection. This reveals a more caring, considerate side to Anil’s father which is contrasted by the ‘a bully to his family’ Becky smells xo
9
Ao2 Device- Symbolism the worm simile ‘a squiggly worm’ used to describe how Marimuthu views the train/the truth within Anil reflects the relief he feels at having escaped justice- the heat of his wife’s injustice distorts the train and makes the image sinister, but even more sinister to the reader is the ‘shadow of a smile’ which hints that all is under control again.
10
Ao2 Device- Extended Metaphor
The community in which Anil is trapped in is presented as close, due to the ‘dreaming their dreams that rarely amounted to anything’ which suggests that people cannot do what they want, and are therefore are physically and emotionally confined

A02 Device- 3rd Person Narrative
'anil lay awake on his mat, his eyes transfixed on the thatched roof of the hut where there were many holes in the ceiling.‘ And later on in the story, Noor uses the first person narrative in italics line 216 'i will never forget this town and the sin that it buries today.' the use of the italics and the first person narrative makes the reader comprehend that in witnessing this murder and the fact that they are getting away with it and he has to leave his father and mother shows that this will have a profound effect on him for the rest of his life. the way that the writer suddenly changes into the 1st person narrative and the use of the italics 'i will never' suggests that this was not how his life were to pan out, the direction he's going to wasn't the one for him.
