Jane Austen house Museum
Located in the village of Chawton. 18th century home where Jane Austen spent the last 8 years of her life. Opened in 1949 by the Duke of Wellington

Between the years 1781- 1787, the house was a pub called “The New Inn”.
The New Inn was the site of two public murders. Edward Austen Knight (Jane’s brother) gave the house to his mother and sisters.

Jane lived in the Chawton home from 1809 until 1817.
She lived with her mother and sister, Cassandra, and a family friend Martha Lloyd.

Writing occupied most of Jane’s time but she also loved spending time with her young nieces and nephews. Jane loved to play the piano in the morning. In the evening Jane liked to take long walks in the garden and enjoyed sewing.

FuN fACTS There are displays of patchwork/fine needlework that Jane worked on with her mother. Jane’s first chore everyday was to prepare the tea and coffee. 30,000 people on average visit the home per year. Cassandra lived in the house until 1845.

Fun Facts cont. There is a donkey carriage at the house that the Austen women used for local trips and visits. To give the women more privacy Edward removed the original road-facing window and moved it to overlook the side garden.
