1 Warm Up Grace scored an 85% on Dr. Lutze’s first AP Stats quiz. Her friend Katherine, who is in Mrs. Hall’s class, scored an 81%. Grace thought she did better than her friend. Then Katherine found the mean and standard deviation for each class, which are shown below. Mean Std. Dev Lutze Hall Who actually did better on the quiz and why? 2 Gas Tax This is data on the gasoline tax (in cents per gallon) charged in various states in 2016. 1) Calculate the mean, std dev, median and IQR for the data. 2) The U.S. government gas tax is about 18 cents/gallon. Calculate mean, std dev, median, and IQR including the federal tax. 3) Assume every state doubles their gas tax. Calculate mean, std dev, median and IQR for the new state tax only. 3 Activity – Measure Car Lengths
1) Your partner is the person sitting next to you. 2) Each group will go out into the parking lot behind the classroom and measure the length of a car (bumper to bumper). 3) Every group should select at least one car. If possible measure a second car so that all cars in the lot are in our data set. 4) Please do not damage the cars. You do not need to touch them! 5) Measure the length using a tape measure and/or ruler and record the length of the car in inches on the board. 6) Return to the room when you are finished.

4 Activity – Measure Car Lengths
1) Calculate the mean, standard deviation, median and IQR for the data set. 2) Convert the data from inches to feet and repeat the calculations.

5 Density Curve Sometimes, the overall pattern of a large number of observations is so regular that we can describe it using a smooth curve.

6 Practice 1) Make a histogram of the data for the car lengths. The histogram should have approximately 6-8 classes. 2) Sketch a density curve that approximates your histogram. 3) Sketch the position of the median and the mean on the histogram/density curve. 4) Describe the shape of the distribution.
