3. Ethics Ethics are rules of conduct that people should follow
Helps us decide whether something is right or wrong
Assumes we have the free will to make decisions and act on those decisions

4. Four Basic Rules of Ethics
1. Do good; avoid evil
2. Be fair and unbiased
Unbiased, which means free of favoritism.
3. Respect the dignity of all people
4. Be responsible for your thoughts and conduct

Moral beliefs are actually habits learned as children
Adults develop habits over their lifetime
Not all habits are right
Be tolerant of other people’s concepts, beliefs, and feelings

Value system: consists of our set of ideals, beliefs, interests, likes, and dislikes that we use every day to make decisions
Our beliefs about what is and is not important
Involves freely chosen behavior based on values we believe are important

9. Cultural and Universal Norms
Norms: patterns of behavior considered acceptable or proper by a social group
Morals: refers to our behavior, right or wrong
Cultural Norms: All societies have morals, values, and concepts of human rights
Customs and values depend upon the culture in which we live
Universal Norms: An obligation to honor constitutional justice, civil law, and the moral norms of our communities

10. The Ethical and Moral Decisions Process
Four steps to help make the right ethical and moral decisions:
1. Consider all the facts
2. Determine the moral values or rules that apply to the situation
3. Always make decisions and act in light of your knowledge of the values and facts
4. Choose the lesser of two evils, in some cases you can never choose

It should be a list of reminders that cause us to practice acceptable behavior
