1 Know God John 4:39-42 Pastor Keone

2 John 4: Many of the Samaritans from that town believed in him because of the woman's testimony, "He told me everything I ever did." 40 So when the Samaritans came to him, they urged him to stay with them, and he stayed two days.

3 John 4:39-42 41 And because of his words many more became believers
John 4: And because of his words many more became believers. 42 They said to the woman, "We no longer believe just because of what you said; now we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this man really is the Savior of the world."

6 What does it mean to “know” something? For us it has a dual meaning
Know intellectually Know experientially In the New Testament, there are two words translated as “know” One word means to see or understand Other word means to know experientially

7 Is it possible to “know” God
Is it possible to “know” God? Not just intellectually, but experientially?

8 Romans 1: The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their wickedness, 19 since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. 20 For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities-- his eternal power and divine nature-- have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.

9 Luke 10:22 22 "All things have been committed to me by my Father
Luke 10:22 22 "All things have been committed to me by my Father. No one knows who the Son is except the Father, and no one knows who the Father is except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him."

10 John 14: Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7 If you really knew me, you would know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him." 8 Philip said, "Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us." 9 Jesus answered: "Don't you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, 'Show us the Father'?

11 Since God can be known, how do we go about learning about Him?

12 Since God can be known, how do we go about learning about Him
Since God can be known, how do we go about learning about Him? Jesus says, “Follow me!”

13 Since God can be known, how do we go about learning about Him? Jesus says, “Follow me!” Answer the questions: “What distracts me from learning?” “How do I learn?”

14 Gregorc Model of Learning Styles
The way in which we view the world is called our… Perception We perceive in two ways Concrete and Abstract The way we use the information we perceive is called… Ordering We order in two ways… Sequential and Random

15 Perception: the way we take information in
Concrete: information gained from 5 senses. Deals with here and now – not looking for hidden meanings. “It is what it is” Abstract: visualize, conceive ideas, to understand or believe what we can’t actually see. Looking beyond what is to the more subtle implications. “It’s not always what it seems”.

16 Ordering: the way we use the information we perceive
Sequential: Organize information in a linear step-by-step manner. Logical train of thought, a conventional approach to dealing with information. Prefer to have a plan and follow it. “Follow the steps”. Random: Organize information by chunks and with no particular sequence. Able to skip steps and still produce the desired result. Appears as if they do not have a plan. “Just get it done”.

17 Four Combinations Concrete Sequential (CS) Abstract Sequential (AS)
Hardworking Conventional Accurate Stable Dependable Consistent Factual Organized Abstract Sequential (AS) Analytic Objective Knowledgeable Thorough Structured Logical Deliberate Systematic Abstract Random (AR) Sensitive Compassionate Perceptive Imaginative Idealistic Sentimental Spontaneous Flexible Concrete Random (CR) Quick Intuitive Curious Realistic Creative Innovative Instinctive Adventurous

18 What Questions Do They Ask When Learning?
Concrete Sequential (CS) Key word: facts What facts do I need? How do I do it? What should it look like? When is it due? Abstract Sequential (AS) Key word: underlying principles How do I know this is true? Have we considered all the possibilities? What will we need to accomplish this? Abstract Random (AR) Key word: personal relevance What does this have to do with me? How can I make a difference? Concrete Random (CR) Key word: compelling reasons How much of this is necessary?

19 Luke 8: "No one lights a lamp and hides it in a jar or puts it under a bed. Instead, he puts it on a stand, so that those who come in can see the light. 17 For there is nothing hidden that will not be disclosed, and nothing concealed that will not be known or brought out into the open. 18 Therefore consider carefully how you listen. Whoever has will be given more; whoever does
