4 Allusion Definition: A reference to a famous person, place, event, or work of literature. Purpose: To remind the readers of an event or person that relates to the current story Example: MLK Jr. begins his famous “I Have a Dream” speech by saying “Five score years ago” to remind people of Abraham Lincoln who freed the slaves…a similar battle as the civil rights movement.

5 Slant Rhyme Definition: Partial rhyme; two words that do not completely rhyme Purpose: If an author wants to continue the rhyme scheme but cannot use exact rhyme they will often use slant rhyme Example: The round green eyes and the long wavering bodies All those wild witches, those most noble ladies.

6 Internal Rhyme Definition: Two words within one line of poetry that rhyme. Purpose: To create a rhythm Example: I am the daughter of Earth and Water, And the nursling of the Sky; I pass through the pores of the ocean and shores; I change, but I cannot die.

7 Assonance Definition: Repetition of vowel sounds within non-rhyming words. Purpose: To create rhythm or meter within a line of poetry Example: Langston Hughes’ Mother to Son “It had tacks in it”

8 Imagery Definition: Imagery consists descriptive words and phrases that re-create sensory experiences for the reader. Imagery appeals to one or more of the five senses. Purpose: to help the reader imagine what is being described. Example: “She serves me a red prickly pear on a spiked cactus/She sprinkles raindrops in my face on a sunny day”

9 Pun Definition: The humorous use of a word in such a way that suggests different meanings OR words having the same sound but different meaning. Purpose: Humor Examples: Sir Lancelot had a bad dream about losing his horse; it was a knight mare!
