1 GCSE COMPUTER SCIENCE Topic 4 - Computers 4.1 Machines and Computational Modelling

2 This presentation covers the following content from the specification
Students should: 4.1.1 understand the input-process-output model

3 Computer Systems What makes a computer system? Part A. Watch the following video: Link:

4 Drag the pictures to the correct categories, computer system or not:
Activity 1 Drag the pictures to the correct categories, computer system or not: Computer systems Non-computer systems

5 Activity 2 Class Discussion Four Elements
So what does make a computer system? ACTIVITY Draw this diagram in your workbook

6 Key Terms Below are three key terms you need to understand Input
To enter data into a computer system Process To change the meaning or format of some data Output To receive data that has been processed or stored ACTIVITY Write the three definitions above in your workbook

7 Computer Systems What makes a computer system? Part B. Watch the following video: Link:

8 Computer Systems PC Example CPU, GPU
Keyboard, mouse, microphone, webcam, touchscreen Monitor, speakers, headphones, touchscreen Hard drive, USB stick, CDs NOTE: A touchscreen can be both input and output

9 Activity 3 List the inputs and outputs of each of the following Computer Systems below: Device Name Inputs Outputs Laptop Washing Machine Calculator Xbox One Smart Phone Digital Watch Microwave

16 Activity 3 Microwave INPUTS OUTPUTS Buttons Monitor (screen) Touchpad
Heat Light

17 Activity 4 Fill in the blanks Write out the following sentences, use the words below to fill in the gaps correctly: A computer system has one or more __________ to provide data. This __________ is then __________ in some way. The outcome of the __________ is sent to an __________ device. For processing to take place, there needs to be a set of __________ of what needs to be done. This set of instructions is called a __________. This __________ is called a stored-program computer. Words to use: program, system, processing, processed, output, instructions, data, inputs.

18 Write out the following summary in your workbook.
Activity 5 4.1 Summary Write out the following summary in your workbook. Although computers come in all sorts of shapes and sizes they all do principally the same thing. They take inputs, process them according to a given set of rules, and generate outputs. Algorithms (a set of rules that are followed to complete a task) expressed in program code specify the processes a computer carries out.
