Most Greek city states: “let Athens deal with their business” Some Spartans come to aid Athens (300 soldiers) Battle of Thermopylae – Narrow Mountain Pass – I need more volunteers to stage this battle! Soldiers lose, but Greece wins (unifies the city states) 300 Spartans sacrifice themselves for Athens Their Example Inspires rest of Greece

Xerxes loses 1/3 of his soldiers in one battle!
