Effects of Arctic Ice Cap Melting
Its Impact on Earth’s Spheres and Sustainability
2
What constitutes a Polar Ice Cap?
A Polar ice cap is a high-latitude region of land or water that is covered in ice. Ice caps form as ice accumulates year after year. As part of a cyclical process, each year some of the ice melts in the summer, and then reforms in the winter
3
Shrinking Ice Caps Over the last several decades Scientist have tracked significant changes in the size of the Arctic Ice Cap Satellite images show the area of permanent ice cover is decreasing at a rate of 9% each DECADE At this rate, scientists predict that summers in the Arctic will be ice-free by 2030 Disappearing arctic sea ice Disappearing arctic sea ice -
4
The Questions is: How does the melting of the Arctic ice cap affect Earth’s spheres and sustainability
5
Your job now is to: Get into a group of 4
Your group will answer questions on pgs Each member of the group will complete part A individually Each person is responsible for researching the affects on a certain sphere (Parts B, C, D, and E) Use the question prompts from the text pages to help you answer your sections
6
By the end of the block… Each person will choose B - E
Answer the questions via illustrations / diagrams / words / images etc...on a separate piece of paper Put together ‘4 spheres’ for your good copy
