2 River Thames The River Thames is a river that flows through souther It is the longest river entirely in England and the second longest in the United Kingdom. 3 Etymology The hydronym Thames comes from the Celtic name of this river — Tamesas (prakelt. *tamēssa)[1] recorded in Latin as Tamesis and reflected in modern Welsh Tafwys "Thames". The name supposedly means "dark" and compared to IRL. teimheal, wall. tywyll "darkness" (prakelt. *temeslos), Ms.-ie. teimen "dark grey", "darkness", SKR. tamas.

4 The Thames is a place of rest and festivities
When the Thames was covered with ice only a few times staged large "fairs on the ice." Conducted sports competitions, and roasted oxen.

5 «Boat race» Held annually in the spring "boat race" — a competition between Oxford and Cambridge universities. Each team of eight rowers swims a distance of about 7 kilometers. For the first time this competition was held in 1829 in Henley-Oh-Thames, upstream. This summer regatta is one of the first and popular in Europe — has become a favorite annual event.

8 Water Music In 1717, the composer Georg Handel wrote the piece "water Music" walking in honor of king George I, with his family on the river. Once one of them, next to the Royal boat, there were 50 musicians. During the 8-kilometer journey upstream from Westminster to Chelsea three times they performed this work.

9 Thames and transport On the Thames there is also a public waterway. Some of the routes aimed at tourists and walking, others are more often used by Londoners as a regular public transport, for example for journeys to work.
