The War of 1812 has been called the “Second War for American Independence” primarily because the
(1) British blocked United States access to the port of New Orleans
(2) United States continued to resist taxes imposed by Great Britain
(3) British government had never fully respected the United States as a free nation
(4) United States and Great Britain had not signed a peace treaty after the Revolutionary War

2. The Era of Good Feelings
During Monroe’s second term in office the country felt
a new sense of unity
Although political parties were getting along, SECTIONALISM began to take shape
Three Political Giants Emerge
John C. Calhoun – represented the South
Daniel Webster - represented the North
Henry Clay - represented the West

3. A New National Bank –
The original bank of the U.S. charter ran out in 1811, By 1816, even those against the bank during Washington’s presidency saw its economic importance.
1819 – McCulloch v. Maryland – John Marshall declared that the bank of the U.S. was legal based on the Elastic (Necessary & Proper) Clause. Also, no state could tax a bank chartered by the federal govt.
Protection from British Manufacturing –
Due to the very low price of British goods…some American companies went out of business
- In response the U.S. Congress passed the Tariff of 1816

4. The South Gets Angry – High tariffs made goods expensive for the South to buy, they did not have as many factories, so they did not benefit from the protective tariff.

5. Henry Clay’s American System – Clay suggested keeping tariffs high, but making internal improvements. People would buy farm products from the South and West improving life for everyone.
