Staff and Departmental Development Unit How do we all realise the potential of mindfulness? Dr. Ged Hall Impact training and development

2 Who am I? Physical chemistry researcher Technology solution consultant Training and development Working with researchers to increase their impact Primary Headteacher partner

3 What are the next 45 minutes about?
Beginning the process of creating a shared plan to realise the potential of Mindfulness in schools by: Sharing ideas Sharing objectives Sharing our different perspectives To Develop our shared understanding of the current situation Develop our shared understanding of what we are trying to achieve Know the steps we need to take to get there Achieved!

4 How does research have impact? An example
Mental models approach to decision-making research and its role in reducing sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) What is the approach? Compare the decision-makers’ (adolescent females) mental model to that of sexual health experts’ decision model. Target the intervention to reduce STDs at the identified gaps between the mental model and the expert model Work undertaken by in the US Project led by Dr. Julie Downs The team included Professor Wandi Bruine de Bruin (Leeds University Business School) amongst others.

5 Example’s impact timeline
Previous interventions ineffective and costly Practitioners approach researchers ~ 2001 Bid developed jointly Research starts ~ 2002 3 interventions tested longitudinally including interactive CD ~ 2002 / 3 Results analysed / paper written and published ~ 2004 ~ 2003 onwards CD marketed CD shown to be one of 5 (from ~450) interventions to have a positive effect on reducing STD infections ~ 2009 and 2012 $7M project to update materials and use new technologies ~ 2012

6 What is important about this example for us?
Shared ownership of the research and the implementation of the findings Researchers and practitioners co-authors of papers and the CD materials. Everyone was part of the one team The ‘need’ for the research came from the practitioners Shared goal kept everyone ‘on board’ Overcame misunderstandings Helped everyone to empathise with each other Motivated everyone to understand the different cultures / situations / languages

7 Our timeline Today Tentative research indicates potential
(published ~ 2010) ESRC project to better understand needs / delivery models ~ 20013/14 Bid(s) need to be written to write / test programmes (randomised control trials) and understand their economics ~ 2014/15 Research starts ? Develop flexible programmes for different schools / outcomes Implement and Test programmes / analyse results Paper(s) published Programme(s) offered to other schools Positive impact for young people and school communities Today

8 Questions for discussion
Tables How might we encourage uptake of successful programme(s) in all schools? 1 and 6 How might materials from successful programme(s) be made available across England and beyond? 2 and 7 In what ways have other ideas / research filtered into secondary education and been adopted as ‘whole school approaches’? 3 and 8 How might we influence policy (education, health, etc) to encourage take up? 4 and 9 What differences are there in other countries (outside England, outside UK) that we should be aware of to help us to encourage take up there? 5 and 10
