Timing and Interference
By Stephanie Kwan
2
Objective: To understand how a basic engine works
Link timing and interference See how the two affect the performance
3
How Engines Work: 4 Stroke Cycle - Intake Stroke - Compression Stroke - Combustion Stroke Note: Valves are closed during compression and combustion for a sealed chamber in most ideal state
5
Timing is Everything: High Speeds: - Piston must move up and down quickly - Valves are opened and closed quickly\ Probelm: - Not enough time for cylinders to fill up\ Solution: Intake valves open during exhaust stroke Performance: Crankshaft and Camshaft must be adjusted accordingly
6
Timing Advanced Techniques
- Mechanical and Electrical Ways Larger engine - More fuel per rotation would combust Forced induction - Pressurized amount of gas in the engine VTEC (Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control) - At high RPMs open valves wide - At low RPMs open the valves small - Found in Hondas
8
Conclusion: Basic engines work in a 4 stroke cycle
Timing is everything Valves Spark plug Advanced Techniques Large engines Forced Induction VTEC
