E-COMMERCE The Revolution Is Just Beginning
2
DEFINITION OF E-COMMERCE
Electronic commerce means buying and selling of products and services by business and consumers over the internet. It is associated with buying and selling of information, products and services over computer communication networks. Running a web site in a businesslike manner is the basic concept of E-commerce. Electronic commerce includes electronic trading of goods, services and electronic material.
3
Why Study E-commerce? E-commerce technology is different and more powerful than any of the other technologies that we have seen in the past century. E-commerce has challenged much traditional business thinking. E-commerce has a number of unique features that help explain why we have so much interest in e-commerce.
4
Seven Unique Features of E-commerce
Ubiquity Global Reach Universal Standards Richness Interactivity Information Density Personalization/Customization
5
Ubiquity It is available everywhere at anytime. Online the stores never close. Clicks-and-Bricks:-you can order online and pick it up at the store. It liberates the market from being restricted to a physical space and makes it possible to shop from your desktop, at home, at work, or even from your car, using mobile commerce.
6
Global Reach E-commerce technologies enable a business to easily reach across geographic boundaries. You can go "shopping" all around the world in one place. This has given businesses a chance to reach other markets and to billions of potential customers. E-commerce speeds up traditional methods.
7
Universal Standards Universal Standards are standards shared by the world. This is a revolutionary thing for not just e-commerce but the world. There are lower entry costs and minimal search costs compared to traditional commerce. The universal technical standards of the Internet and e-commerce greatly lower market entry costs—the cost merchants must pay just to bring their goods to market. At the same time, for consumers, universal standards reduce search costs—the effort required to find suitable products.
8
Richness Richness is the complexity and content of a message.
Advertising and branding are an important part of commerce. E-commerce can deliver video, audio, animation, etc. much better than other technologies (billboards, signs, etc.)
9
Interactivity Interactivity allows online merchants to engage consumers in face-to-face like interactions without an actual face to face experience. E-commerce interactivity is much better because businesses can interact on a much larger scale. E-commerce can collect information from consumers more easily and efficiently with forms and surveys.
10
Information Density The E-commerce technology
-reduces information costs -raises the quality of information Consider the old way to share information, i.e., paper, mail, voice communication, etc. A number of business consequences result from the growth in information density. In E-commerce markets, prices and costs become more transparent.
11
Personalization/Customization
E-commerce technologies permit personalization: merchants can target their marketing messages to specific individuals by adjusting the message to a person’s name, interests, and past purchases. The technology also permits customization—changing the delivered product or service based on a user’s preferences or prior behavior. Personalization and Customization are tailoring messages and products to consumers based on their preferences.
12
SOME OTHER FEATURES A paperless exchange of business information.
It increases productivity and efficiency. It creates new markets. In E-commerce customers are self-evident . Customers have direct access to the information. It’s a kind of value addition in business.etc.
