4. Anatomy of a Game Game Attributes Game Elements
Game attributes are defined as features and characteristics inherent in the game structure and are likely to initiate and maintain interest in gaming activities (Hull, Williams, & Griffiths, 2013).
Action language, assessment, conflict/challenge, control, environment, game fiction, human interaction, immersion, rules/goals
Game elements can be defined as a set of tools shared by games, but not necessarily critical conditions of games (Deterding, Dixon, Khaled, & Nacke, 2011).
Badges, leaderboard, levels, time constraints, limited resources, turns, points, rewards, appointments, loss aversion, quests, status, virality, ownership, adaptive release, boss level, instant feedback

Can be very upsetting to students who are always at the bottom or middle. Negatively impact achievement and beliefs on self and learning.

11. Leaderboards Start the leaderboard over for each unit
Change up the goals each month or unit: points, attendance, bonus items (Alaswad & Nadolny, 2015)
Have leaderboards be obtainable for all by focusing on skills achieved rather than points (Seaborn, Pennefather, & Fels, 2013)
Use team instead of individuals
Use pseudonyms instead of real names
Try optional leaderboards for those who are interested. Provide incentives for all who participate.
Think carefully about rewards and incentives. For example, pizza party for the top 5 students, or a pizza party for all when total points reach certain rules are met (everyone has at least 10 points and the top 5 people total 100 points)
