(A) Axial contrast-enhanced CT scan of the neck in a young woman with 5 days of torticollis, odynophagia, a low-grade fever, and a slightly elevated white blood cell count demonstrates a fluid collection (F) in the retropharyngeal space. A few displaced contrastenhancing vessels are seen around the collection, but the peripheral enhancement that might be expected with a retropharyngeal abscess is not present. (B) Axial image at a more cephalad level demonstrates an irregular calcification anterior to the C2 vertebral body, consistent with calcific tendinitis of the longus colli muscle. The fluid collection seen in part A represents an associated retropharyngeal effusion. Source: Chapter 3.
