We will be going over the review for tomorrow’s test!

2 Immigration to Texas A group of people or individuals, who moves or moved to Texas for a better life from what they already had in another country or state. This is important because the population of Texas will increase with the new arrivals. The immigrants will have to adapt to the way of life in Texas.

3 Push / Pull Factors Push Factors: a negative aspect or condition that motivates one to leave; one's country, state, city, etc. In migration, push factors are those that encourage a population to leave their home. Famine, disease, lack of resource, persecution, racial discrimination Pull Factors: The positive aspects or condition of Texas serve to attract immigrants to settle in the state. Cheap land, more money, freedom of religion, job opportunities, better life

4 Demographics „Statistical data relating to the population and particular groups within it. By looking at the statistics the state/country can figure out how many houses to build, update the highway structures, how many jobs are produced or need to be produced, which ethnic groups live in the state Growth Rate, Birth/Death Rate, Gross Domestic Product, Supply and Demand

5 German Immigrants Most Germans arrived in Texas in the 1850’s. Provided leadership to oppose nativism (policy of protecting the interests of native-born or established inhabitants against those of immigrants). They were Unionists who opposed slavery, even arguing for immediate emancipation. They were leaders in the Union army during the Civil War. Established towns of New Braunfels, Weimar, Fredricksburg, and many others. Lived in obscurity working as teachers, farmers, ranchers, and politicians

6 Jewish Immigrants Jewish immigration began invading Texas in the 1830’s and the immigration lasted until the end of World War II. Settled along the Brazos River, as well as Galveston, Bolivar, and San Antonio. Settlement pattern was repeated numerous times: first, the formation of a cemetery-benevolent society, followed by a synagogue, whether it was formal or informal. Many new immigrants came through the port of Galveston. From 1907 to 1914, the Galveston Movement, locally spearheaded by Rabbi Henry Cohen, settled some 10,000 Jewish immigrants.Often worked as backpack peddlers

7 Polish Immigrants The greatest wave of Polish immigrants began in 1854 and lasted until the outbreak of World War I in Most Polish immigrants settled in South and Central Texas, following the Civil War, some moved to East Texas. Established towns of Panna Maria, Brenham, Bryan, Chapell Hill, and more. Most worked as tenant farmers, laborers, and artisans. Often times remained isolated because of the difficulty in overcoming the language barrier

8 Irish Immigrants Natives of Ireland were among the first settlers in Spanish-ruled Texas, and the story of the Irish in Texas is in many ways coincident with the founding of the republic and the development of the state. Helped to fight against the Mexican Army during the Texas Revolution. Left Ireland for a better life after being persecuted for their religion and starving during the famines.

9 Immigration influences to Texas
Described as a melting pot of "Southern" and "Southwestern" features, with pockets of ethnic group towns and settlements in many locations. Blended cultures give us different customs, holidays, clothes, architecture, food and much more The cultures of Texas society is a mixture of Native American, Anglo American, African American, Spanish, Mexican, Europeans, Asian and many more

10 Cesar Chavez Union leader and labor organizer Cesar Chavez dedicated his life to improving treatment, pay and working conditions for farm workers. He lived the life of a poor farmer’s kid as well as working in the farms. He served in the military with equality among all the men. Once he went back to California he knew that things need to change for the Latin American Hispanic society.

11 Scott Joplin Black Texan who established ragtime, one of the most popular forms of music during the turn of the 20th century

12 Horton Foote An American playwright and screenwriter. He was best known for his Academy Award-winning screenplays such as the 1962 film To Kill a Mockingbird, and the 1983 film Tender Mercies
